In ‘Family Life,’ I wanted to highlight the protective nature of the adults surrounding the young calf, emphasizing the tight family connections elephants share. The calf takes center stage, and I enjoyed refining the details to bring more life and interest to the scene.

I adjusted the head slightly, and added flapping ears for more interest. I also extended the composition to feature additional legs, showing that you don’t need a perfect photo to create an effective and compelling piece of art.

The pencil work in this drawing is softer than usual. It works well but it owes more to luck than good judgement.

I had already gone too far before I realised I’d chosen the ‘wrong’ paper, it was a smoother grade but it was too late to change so I carried on anyway. Serendipity played its part and the result was a better drawing.

I’m fond of this portrait. I was pleased how well the subtle greys of the white feathers turned out. I thought it would be straight forward, but as always, I struggled. Perfectionism is both a curse and a blessing.

The image has impact because I chose to draw a dark background. That looks like the easy bit, and you’d be wrong. Very few people know how to draw a flat background like this, it’s only possible with the right type of paper and fine mechanical pencils.

You need the correct hatching technique but that’s not all. It takes time, a steady hand, and a great deal of patience, all in short supply in this day and age.

All you need to do is hop on a local train in Capetown, get off in Simonstown and walk down to Boulders Beach. There are penguins everywhere. You can go for a swim and have penguins swimming around you.

Giraffes have faces made for portraiture. They can be surprisingly expressive and this one appears to be sucking a lemon.

He’s a lofty male Rothschild’s giraffe and he was looking down on me at the Langatta Giraffe Center on the outskirts of Nairobi. It’s a great place to visit. There’s a viewing platform where the public are invited to get eye to eye with the residents and actually feed them. The kids love it.

But don’t think this is just a tourist attraction, the center has a serious conservation role and actively help this subspecies by reintroducing them back into the wild

This is a real Siamese cat, not a pure bred but a Siamese none the less. I met her in Thailand and you can’t get more authentic than that, she’s a true native.

I was staying in a beachside guest house and this was the owners’ cat, and here she’s doing what all respectable cats do, waiting for her fair share of my dinner.

It’s not obvious from this angle but she was heavily pregnant and so emotionally had me over a barrel. I gave generously.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of the highlights of Sri Lanka. I don’t know how many Jumbos there were when I visited, 40 or so I’d guess. It’s great fun and you can follow the herd as they walk down to the river, through the village, and watch them play.

As usual, I took a series of bad photos but never mind I had all the info I needed. I drew Mum from one photo and her calf from another. I raised the youngsters’ trunk to add intimacy and finished off by giving Mum a flapping ear

I got up at 6am to see these pandas at feeding time in the Chengdu Breeding Centre in Sichuan Province in China. I made it a mission to go and see them.

I needed a drawing of pandas so I thought I might as well go to China, well why not? It would have been nice to see them in the wild of course but as I travelled in winter and it was minus 20 in the mountains at the time I thought better of it.

This is a powerful male orangutan with his large side cheeks. I saw him in Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesian Borneo. It is home to Camp Leakey, the original rehabilitation project, run by Dr. Birute Galdikas

This portrait cam about after I stopped to take a rest on a bench in a forest clearing. I sensed that I was not alone, I turned and saw this guy behind me. I moved out of his way and gave up my seat. He posed nicely.
