In this post, I’ll show you five small home office ideas that prove you can create a calm and inspiring workspace almost anywhere. Each setup features one of my wildlife drawings on the wall, and they all show how black and white art compliments any color scheme.
You’ll see how to use light, color, and layout to get more from your workspace, and I’ll share a few simple things that help make each home office idea work. These rooms aren’t styled to perfection, they’re ‘lived-in’, and practical.
By the end, you’ll have five small home office ideas you can re-create in your own way, using pieces you already have and adding art as the finishing touch.
1. Small Home Office Idea: Warm Mid-Century Corner

This setup feels like it belongs in a quiet corner of a small apartment or spare bedroom. The warm beige walls, soft daylight, and natural wood tones make it calm without feeling bland.
The mid-century desk and chair fit neatly under the window, keeping the room open and easy to move around.
What brings it together is the art. The cat portrait hanging above the desk gives the space a personal touch and a hint of character. It softens the clean lines of the furniture and adds warmth without clutter.
I drew that cat years ago, and it always makes me smile when I see it, it’s a small reminder that workspaces can feel homely too.
If you want to recreate this look, stick with simple furniture in wood or neutral finishes, and hang one or two framed prints that mean something to you. Add a tall leafy plant to bring the room to life and a striped rug to pull the tones together.

2. Small Home Office Idea: Garden Outhouse Workspace

This one’s set in a converted outhouse at the end of the garden. The soft green walls and sunlight through the windows make it feel calm and grounded. It’s a small space but it works because everything has its place. The shelves keep things tidy, and the simple wooden desk gives you room to spread out.
There’s a heater tucked in under the desk for when the the weather turns colder.
On the wall, I’ve hung one of my drawings, a jaguar sketch called ‘Eye Contact’ that adds a quiet bit of strength without stealing attention. It gives the space a bit of ‘oomph.
To set up something similar, paint the walls a soft shade that reflects light. Use simple wooden furniture and open shelving. Keep the decor minimal so the space stays airy.

3. Small Home Office Idea: Minimalist and Functional

This setup shows how a small office can feel open and calm without losing practicality. The light walls and simple furniture make the room feel bigger than it is. There’s nothing unnecessary here—just clean lines, plenty of light, and everything within reach.
The framed drawing above the desk adds a quiet focal point. It’s my white rhino piece, Heat and Dust, and it fits the space because it’s calm and balanced. A single piece like that gives a room personality without breaking the minimalist feel.
To recreate this look, keep to neutral tones and natural materials. Choose one artwork that ties the colors together, then add small plants or textured pieces to soften the edges. Keep the desk surface clear and store everything else on shelves or in boxes.

4. Small Home Office Idea: Bright Garage Conversion

This small office used to be a garage but now feels open and inviting. The white brick walls keep the room bright, and the French windows bring in plenty of daylight. The setup is practical, simple, and well-organized.
A framed drawing hangs neatly above the desk, adding a personal touch without crowding the wall. It gives a sense of warmth to an otherwise functional space.
To create a similar space, paint the walls white to reflect light and choose a pale laminate floor for warmth and durability. Add floating shelves and simple furniture to keep it organized and open.

5. Small Home Office Idea: Cozy Corner Workspace

This setup fits perfectly in a small corner and feels warm without being crowded. The muted walls, soft light, and checkered rug make the space easy to work in for hours. The mix of wood and white gives it a simple, relaxed look.
On the top shelf sits my tawny owl drawing, framed in black. It blends naturally with the plants and vases, adding a quiet, personal touch that suits the room’s calm feel.
If you want to create something like this, start with neutral wall paint and good lighting. Add a pegboard or shelf above the desk to keep things organized and within reach. Choose warm wood tones, a soft rug, and one piece of art that feels personal.

5 Simple Home Office Ideas: Final Thoughts
It’s easy to get lost scrolling through hundreds of “perfect” home office ideas online. Most of them look OK but fall apart on examination. Five good ideas are worth more than fifty daft concepts thrown-together in a hurry.
Each of these small home office ideas works because it’s simple, practical, and personal. You can picture yourself in these office rooms.
Why not borrow bits from each one and make them your own. Add one or two touches that make you want to sit down and get started, that’s what makes a space work.
